The 35th Anniversary Academy Festival – School of Dance Spring Performances being the Opening Event

The 35th Anniversary Academy Festival presented by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), featuring more than 50 performances and activities, will run till 1 July 2019. Met with enthusiastic response from a broad spectrum of the Hong Kong community in the past two years, the annual Festival continues to offer a rich variety of performing arts events this year. Some of the programmes offer free admission to the public.

A series of performances and activities include Rock n Roll Broadway musical, classical opera by Mozart, dance performances of Ballet, Chinese Dance and Contemporary Dance, drama, Cantonese opera excerpts, concerto feast, film screenings, sharing sessions and exhibitions showcasing the students’ talent, the creative process and behind-the-scenes of the productions. The Festival also celebrates the effort of the graduating classes from the six Schools of the Academy — Chinese Opera, Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music, and Theatre and Entertainment Arts. The School of Dance Spring Performances to be held on 3 May is the opening event of the 35th Anniversary Academy Festival.

"The 3rd Academy Festival, coinciding with the celebration of the Academy’s 35th Anniversary, aims to showcase the outstanding talents of students from the Academy’s six Schools through a wide array of engaging and creative performances featuring Chinese opera, dance, drama, music, all coupled with captivating film screenings and exhibitions including those featuring stage and costume designs.  The Academy Festival, launched in April 2017 as an initiative of the Academy Chairman, Professor Stephen Chow, has a major aim to enrich the cultural landscape of Hong Kong.  Last year, the 2nd Academy Festival again received very positive feedback and attracted over 10,000 members of the public to join the many and varied events.  Early this year we received the encouraging news that the Academy has been ranked 1st in Asia and 13th in the World in the performing arts category, as part of the latest QS World University Rankings.  I hope more people from across the Hong Kong community will be able to join our 35th Anniversary Academy Festival to celebrate with us and enjoy some of the many entertaining and engaging events planned from now through until early July this year.” Professor Adrian Walter, Director of the Academy remarked.

The School of Dance Spring Performances, the opening event of the 35th Anniversary Academy Festival, is a celebration of the students, faculty and guest artists’ commitment, dedication and passion in dancing.  The four new premieres created by international and local choreographers: Jonathan Watkins, Xing Liang , Rick Nodine and Anh Ngoc Nguyen are various in style, expression and theme, yet they all share one essence - the manifestation of the relationship between unity and diversity. The 59 dance artists, each with distinctive individualities, will immerse the audiences to the true power of dance, while reflecting their expression of self, society and dance in their performances.
