Complementary Studies

Under the Centre for Education and Research, Complementary Studies Unit offers Language and General Education courses for the 1-year Diploma Foundations, Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Music (Honours) programmes. Students will study both language courses and general education courses during their entire period of study.

General Education is an integral component of the Bachelor’s degree programmes at the Academy. It includes both Liberal Arts and Academy Elective Courses. Liberal Arts Courses are core and required courses designed to equip students with knowledge and skills to engage in academic, artistic and cultural discussions and analysis; to articulate their visions and expressions as reflective individuals and performing artists. Academy Elective Courses aim at developing students to become intellectual, articulate and reflective performing art practitioners.

Language Courses aim to improve students’ English and Chinese proficiency in professional, academic and personal usage. Our mission is to provide students with a quality and coherent language learning experience through discipline-related contents and help them develop into competent and confident communicators in their study lives and beyond. In addition to the core curriculum, we also provide students with language learning resources and a range of out-of-class learning opportunities such as one-on-one consultations, language-related workshops and theme-based workshops, to further enrich students’ learning experiences. All these diversified learning activities contribute to the end goal of turning the learners into effective language users in daily life, cultural and academic settings as well as the performing arts industry.
