Biography
Anh Ngoc Nguyen is a remarkable dancer, a versatile choreographer and an experienced teacher. He is currently Lecturer in Dance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), teaching Contemporary Technique, Partnering Skills, Improvisation and Repertory.
Anh graduated with distinction from the Vietnamese Dance College and received a full scholarship from the HKAPA.
He has performed with numerous dance companies, including the Vietnamese Opera Theatre, Les Ballets Persans (Sweden), Wayne McGregor/Random Dance (UK) and Phoenix Dance Theatre (UK) among others. He was appointed resident choreographer with Union Dance Company (UK) in 2007 and became rehearsal director of Henry Oguike Dance Company (UK) in 2011.
Anh began his career as a choreographer in 2002. He won third prize in the Vietnamese National Dance Competition in 2002, the New British Choreography Bonnie Bird Award in 2005 as well as the Spotlight Award at the UK Critics’ Circle Dance Awards (Spotlight Award for Male Artist) in 2008.
Recognized as a gifted choreographer, Anh was invited to choreograph for Theatre Regensburg in Germany and Inversedance Company in Hungary in 2010. He received Outstanding Choreography Award for SENSE (commissioned by CCDC) from Hong Kong Dance Award 2015 and created his second work, Mother, I am sorry for the company in 2016. Anh had choreographed and co-produced with Arabesque Dance Company two full-length productions, There Where We Were in 2013 and The Ballerina/DongHo in 2017. His work, Moment, was repeatedly rerun for many seasons by the Vietnamese Opera Ballet.
Among some of Anh's diverse portfolio of works include his involvement as dance assistant for the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the opening ceremony of the 2009 FINA World Swimming Championships in Rome. He also choreographed for Alternative Hair Show in London, Hennessy launch event in Macau, Motor Show 2014 in Beijing and Motor Show 2015-2018 in Vietnam. He was invited to choreograph Shake Shake Speare under Mohamed Drissi’s direction for the Sunbeam Chinese Club and was appointed as the Artistic Director for the 21st Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation & Gala Performance in 2019.
Anh conducts workshops widely throughout UK and worldwide. He teaches regularly in the City Contemporary Dance Company and the Hong Kong Dance Company. He was also the artist-in-residence of the HKAPA ballet stream in 2017-2018.
