School of Dance reshapes themselves for the post-pandemic world, School of Dance Summer Performances 2022 at the Rita Tong Liu Drama Theatre is a testament to the School's commitment to nurture the next generation of professional artists.
The first piece, is a restage of renowned Chinese choreographer Liu Qi’s Upon Calligraphy (excerpts), choreographed in 2005 for the Guangdong Modern Dance Company. For this 2022 version, we employed technology for virtual rehearsal and restaging, and the artistic team integrated new video designs into the choreography, with the permission of the choreographer, to enrich the visual effects that complement the poetic movements derived from five different Chinese scripts. Carlo Pacis, award-winning dance alumnus and renowned Filipino choreographer based in Hong Kong, choreographed a new ballet The Acceptance of Being to the beautiful Bach Cello Suite No. 3 in C major, BWV 1009. Live performance by seven cellists from the School of Music elevates the sense of "presence" in the theatre and strengthens the inseparable connections between dance and music. The programme concludes with another new contemporary dance Lost Paradise choreographed by the School of Dance's Artist-in-residence, Jorge Jauregui Allue. This work highlighted 21 contemporary dance students' individuality, personalities, and diversity of styles as dancers, while integrating theatrical scenery design from the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts talent. The piece takes the audience on a journey to imagine and explore your ideas of "paradise".
