Mr CHAN, Sunny
Lecturer (Wig & Make-up)
Sunny CHAN is a Lecturer in Wig and Make-up with more than 40 years of experience in the industry.
He started his career as a theatrical make-up apprentice under Wong Suen Kee of Hong Kong Repertory Theatre. After working actively across theatres in Hong Kong and overseas, winning several Best Make-up Design awards from the Hong Kong Drama Awards, he also dipped his toe into film and television productions and exhibition design.
In 1994, Sunny was awarded a scholarship from Asian Cultural Council, sponsored by the Hopewell Charity Foundation, to conduct research and cultural exchange at the Metropolitan Opera and La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York, the San Francisco Opera, and Sony/Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
Upon his return to Hong Kong in 1995, he became a guest lecturer in theatrical make-up at the HKAPA. In 2007, he established a Splash Make-up Workshop to explore and promote structural make-up. Between 2011 and 2017, he designed a two-year Stage Make-up Programme for the Macau Conservatory and served as its lecturer. In 2017, he assumed his current position at the HKAPA.
Sunny holds a certificate in fine art from Hong Kong Linghai Academy of Art.
Throughout his career, Sunny has continued to contribute to visual arts education in various capacities. He also explored the summary facet and the minutiae facet in his research of the structural characteristics of Asian faces; a study which culminated in the publication of Aesthetic Coding of Asian Faces in 2020.
