Biography

Winnie Yiu Wai Lee is a Lecturer in Costume Technology. She has more than 18 years of experience teaching in theatre costume arts and more than 30 years of experience working in the field.

Winnie was among the first cohort of Technical Arts graduates of the HKAPA, majoring in Costume Technology and graduating with distinction. She became a staff member of the Academy and was funded by the Academy to receive professional training at world-renowned theatre companies, including Royal Opera HouseNational Theatre, and Royal Shakespeare Company in London, New York City Ballet, and Inoue Ballet Company in Tokyo. She is knowledgeable in all aspects of costumes and has been involved in hundreds of local and overseas productions, ranging from drama and opera to dance and film. 

Pursuing further studies, Winnie acquired an MFA from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

During the past few years, Winnie participated in many museum and artist visits and research studies in the UK and Mainland China. In 2010, She published Hidden Agenda of Adoption of Fashion Garment to Performing Arts (co-presented with Dr Roger Ng from Hong Kong Polytechnic University) in 12th Annual Conference, Taipei, International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes. She is particularly interested in western period costume, millinery design and technology, and fabrication.

Winnie’s current areas of specialisation are western costume history, fabric dyeing and application, millinery design and technology, costume theory and techniques, and costume production management. 

She is a professional member of Hong Kong Association of Theatre Technicians and Scenographers.
