“Quarantine Can’t Stop Our Creativity” - HKAPA School of Drama global initiatives with Hong Kong Dramatists

The pandemic has reduced the social contact and physical distance of people, but it would not stop the communication among dramatists around the world.

The School of Drama of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and Hong Kong Dramatists jointly initiate “Quarantine Can’t Stop Our Creativity”- a global creative project to invite people around the world to submit 5 to 10 minutes creative work to share their thought on the pandemic. Participants could choose any art form and media, including short plays, monologues, short novels, dance, music, design, visual art or interdisciplinary media. It aims to encourage the communities and neighbours, and support our medical professionals.

Janice Poon, Senior Lecturer (Playwriting and Dramaturgy) and Academic Project Officer of the Academy’s School of Drama and founder of the project said, “Quarantine can’t stop our creativity. Let’s join force to be the guardian angels of performing arts, and continue to let the unheard stories be told, voice be heard, history be made.” The selected works would be posted on the website of Hong Kong Dramatists to share with members of the public; performing arts submission such as short plays or songs would be performed by the faculty and students of the School of Drama of the Academy, and friends in the art field. For submissions and enquiries, please send an email to drama.dr@hkapa.edu / hkdramatists@gmail.com. Details could also be found on the Academy Facebook (www.facebook.com/hkapa.edu).

In addition, following the global dialogue with over 40 theatre artists on World Theatre Day 2020 last week, the Academy’s School of Drama and Hong Kong Dramatists will host online global dialogue with theatre academies on 13 April 2020 to connect theatre educators around the world. Professor Poon Wai-sum, Dean of Drama hoped that participants could share the situation of theatre academies in different regions and support each other in solidarity. The online discussion would also explore what theatre teaching and learning means to human and nature. Theatre educators from every corner of the world are welcome to join the online dialogue.
