Former Council member of HKAPA, Clarence Chang Ching-po started his career in 1961 as a news editor at AFP’s (Agence France Presse) Hong Kong Bureau, covering China as well as editing and distributing world news. Throughout his 50-year media related career, he has worked as a news reporter, news cameraman, news editor, TV program producer, head of TV news, controller of TV and Radio program services and other top executive positions in major media companies in Hong Kong and overseas.
During his employment with the global media company, The News Corporation Limited, his assignments included General Manager of International Development, News Limited, Sydney; Managing Director/CEO of the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong and the CEO of News Asia Development Limited.
Mr Chang also served in senior management positions in Rediffusion Television (RTV), the first cable pay–TV station in Hong Kong; Network Ten, Australia; Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB); and the first Pan-Asian satellite broadcaster, Star-TV.
He is a founder and former President of the Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) – the leading professional organization of the industry in Asia with over 200 members including CNBC, CNN, Star-TV, Bloomberg, AsiaSat and Scientific Atlanta.
In the 80s, Mr Chang was appointed by the International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.) President, Antonio Samaranch, as a member of the Inter-Union Group of Experts on Olympic Matters and served as the head of Asia Broadcasting Union’s (ABU) Olympic and FIFA World Cup Operation Group, covering major sport events for countries in Asia, including China. His roles in these positions contributed immensely to the popularity of the Olympics and FIFA World Cups events in Asia and the Pacific region. He worked as an expert member of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Bid Committee that brought the Olympic Games to the Chinese Capital.
Among the local and international charity organizations Mr Chang was a board member, include the Hong Kong Community Chest as a Vice Chairman; the Hong Kong Hospice Care Society and the ‘Make-A-Wish’ Foundation International.
Mr Chang started his teaching career in 1972 when he taught ‘Television News’ at the School of Journalism at the then Baptist College. After 35 years in active media professional practices, he has picked up teaching again, since January, 2006, four M.A. degree courses at the Baptist University.
He was a lay member of the Hong Kong University/Queen Mary Hospital’s Institution Review Board from 2000 to 2007; a Council member of HKAPA from 1996 to 2004; and the Vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Government’s Committee on Performing Arts from 2003 to 2008.
