Since the 1980’s, Ringo has been an active participant in the professional dance world, initially as a performer working with numerous international dance artists including Lin Hwai-min, Willy Tsao, Helen Lai and John Mead. In 1990, Ringo became Rehearsal Master of the City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) and in 1993 was promoted to Assistant Artistic Director.

His commitment to developing future generations of dancers has always been apparent and over the years he has nurtured and raised the artistic standard of the dancers in CCDC. He has been a strong advocate for dance and on many occasions has helped to promote dance education programmes in Hong Kong, China and overseas.

Ringo has been an active member of the Academy’s Dance School Advisory Committee and has often restaged CCDC repertoire for the Academy’s student performances.

Realising early on in his dance career that documentation plays an important role in fostering the art form of dance, Ringo began to photograph and video dance performances throughout Hong Kong. He is now widely acclaimed for his photographic work and his photography is constantly in demand by local and international organisations.

In 1998, he was funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council to publish the first publication on dance photography in Hong Kong called The Dance Photography of Ringo Chan. In 1999, he was awarded the ‘Hong Kong Dance Award’ by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance. In 2004, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum included some of his dance photography in their collection. Recently, Ringo was commissioned by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance to produce five videos to record and promote the development of dance in Hong Kong.
