The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) will present Three Sisters, a classic work of Anton Chekhov, at the Academy Studio Theatre from 30 April to 5 May. This production will be directed and adapted by renowned director and actress Bonni Chan, alumna of the inaugural class of School of Drama who also performed in Three Sisters in the year of her graduation.
The story depicts the lives of Olga, Masha and Irina Prozorov, who live with their brother Andrey in a large estate in a remote town of Russia. Compared with their educated and cultural background, this town is unsatisfyingly dull. Ever since their father, battery commander Prozorov, moved the family here from Moscow 11 years ago, the sisters have been strongly wishing to return to their city of birth. Yet, as life unfolds, their Moscow dream becomes more and more beyond their reach...
“That experience (performing in Three Sisters in the year of her graduation) has been leading my exploration in the theatre since then… Like all great masterpieces of art, the play never stops to amaze and inspire me. Scenes seem to be set in the most ordinary daily life manner, yet how each character expresses part of life which is so identifiable around and within us and Chekov had knitted such a story which lands us in the mystery of how life mocks us all in a strangely identifiable manner,” says Chan, “The story took place a decade before the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. Chekhov, one of the greatest writers of Russia, seemed to have felt a great storm was approaching during the time.”
All tickets of this production have been sold out soon after the sales opened.
