The 2nd Academy Festival will be presenting a drama titled Who’s Afraid of Lord of the Flies by the School of Drama. The School has also invited Ms Alice Lau, a renowned actress and an alumna, to take part in this Academy production as guest performer. The play, written and directed by the Dean of School of Drama Professor Poon Wai-sum, will be staged at the Academy Drama Theatre from 2 to 5 May 2018. Tickets are now available.
Inspired by British writer William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies which published in 1954, the play reveals to us a group of children, in the midst of a wartime evacuation, stranded on an uninhabited island where they try to establish the order of life. Threatened by death, their instinct for survival gradually turns the island into a battlefield of power, leading them into the dark side of human nature.
Professor Poon read Lord of the Flies for the first time during his university study and became fascinated by its exploration on the dark side of human nature, “the novel serves as a good teaching material as we can observe how the characters change. The oldest character is 12 years of age, so it will be a challenge for our students to play preteen characters too.”
The play extends the story to a point in time when a few of the children become grown-ups and find themselves in a heap of ruins resulting from an air raid of another war. The ambience of the wasteland is reminiscent of the days on the island when they got into fighting, costing the lives of some little friends. Overwhelmed with grief and perplexed by what they have done, they fall into a retrospective journey of the past…
