The School of Dance of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts presents a large-scale performance every semester that is performed by its Ballet, Chinese Dance and Contemporary Dance students. This Fall, the School, under the leadership of new Dean of Dance Ms Anna CY Chan, will bring on stage four choreographies of distinctive styles and themes; all of which will be accompanied by carefully-selected music, with live accompaniment to one of the works provided by School of Music students. Like all other major Academy productions, the stage set, costume, sound and lighting of the performances are designed and produced by the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts.
Among the four works are two premiers created for ballet students, each will explore the dance genre from a totally different angle – contemporary versus traditional. The Grid, choreographed by Kinsun Chan, is a challenging contemporary piece with strong visual, sound and dynamics which explores human’s daily confrontation of numerous decisions. Inside Out by Anh Ngoc Nguyen adopts a traditional approach and explores the long term relationship between ballet dancers and their training companion ‘ballet barre’.
Contemporary Dance and Chinese Dance students will present excerpts of celebrated works. The former will perform As It Fades (Excerpt) that was created by choreographer Kuik Swee Boon. It draws upon folk tunes, dialects, and memories to create an emotionally-charged language that connects the audiences to a fading Asian heritage; while the latter will present excerpts of Yellow Earth Yellow River by Jiang Hua-xuan. This Chinese Dance piece expands the audiences’ ideology of the nature, people, nationality and the world.
