HKAPA Presents Academy Opera: Don Giovanni
The School of Music of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, in collaboration with the Schools of Theatre and Entertainment Arts, Drama and Dance, will present the Academy Opera: Don Giovanni at the Academy Rita Tong Liu Drama Theatre on 25, 26, 28 and 29 March. This production features international artists sponsored by Dr. Helmut Sohmen and Dr. Peter James Thompson SBS, OBE, JP.
Don Giovanni, an opera composed by Mozart with an Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, is based on a legendary tale of a notorious nobleman who seduces countless women. The Opera combines elements of comedy and tragedy, blending light-hearted moments with dark, dramatic scenes. Its unique mix of styles and exploration of moral themes have secured its reputation as one of the greatest operas ever written.
Ms. Ella Marchment, Director of Don Giovanni, shares her thoughts on the show, “Mozart’s Don Giovanni is a masterful exploration of human arrogance and moral decay. At its core lies a narcissistic protagonist who manipulates, seduces, and destroys, masking his emptiness with charm and wit. Through sublime music and sharp drama, the opera confronts us with the cost of living without conscience or accountability. Giovanni’s refusal to repent is his power and downfall, making his story timeless – a reflection of unchecked ego and the inevitable reckoning it invites.”
