School of Chinese Opera Presents Gongs and Drums: A journey to savour the beauty of Cantonese opera

Gongs and Drums

A recurring series of the School of Chinese Opera, Gongs and Drums will be staged at the Academy Rita Tong Liu Drama Theatre from Jan 14 to 15, 2022, presenting four classical Cantonese opera excerpts. The performance will take the audience to savour the beauty of Cantonese opera and to celebrate the collective effort of students from the Music and Performance Majors of the School.

 

Excerpts include “Bestows the Gift of a Sword at Baihua Pavilion” from Phoenix Mountain, “Scramble for Umbrella” from The Moon Pavilion, “Autumn River” from The Story of Jade Hairpin and Wu Song in the Inn. The renowned Cantonese and Peking opera master, Mr Lau Shun is invited to be the guest director of the last two excerpts.

Performed and accompanied by the students of the Performance Major and the Music Major of the Academy’s School of Chinese Opera. Members of the production team are students and faculty from the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts.

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), established by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Ordinance in 1984, is a leading tertiary institution in the performing arts in Asia. It provides professional undergraduate education and practice-based postgraduate studies. The study encompasses Chinese Opera, Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music, and Theatre and Entertainment Arts. The programmes operated by the School of Chinese Opera are accredited by HKCAAVQ for recognition under the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework. Besides the main campus in Wanchai, Béthanie, the site of the Academy’s Landmark Heritage Campus in Pokfulam, has housed training facilities for the School of Film and Television since 2006. In the QS World University Rankings announced in 2021, the Academy is ranked 1st in Asia and 10th in the world in the Performing Arts category.
